Lions Clubs International Foundation Awards US$200,000 for Lions-Led Flood Relief in Nepal

Grant funding empowers Lions to provide emergency relief and longer-term recovery

OAK BROOK, Ill., Sept. 10, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Lions in Nepal are using a US$200,000 Major Catastrophe Grant from Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) to deliver emergency relief and support longer-term recovery following devastating flash floods that have killed more than 1,000 people and left thousands missing.

Triggered by the collapse of glacial ice and rock near the Nepal-China border, the floods swept through communities, destroying homes, roads, schools, bridges and other critical infrastructure. Immediate assistance made possible with the grant funding includes family food packages, as well as drinking water, blankets, sleeping mats, hygiene and sanitation kits, basic clothing, first-aid and essential medical supplies and temporary shelters. Lions will also support rescue operations and help clear flood debris and mud from affected areas. Additionally, they will provide short-term care and rehabilitation assistance for children who have lost parents or other family members in the disaster.

Because Lions live and serve in these communities, they are well positioned to identify urgent needs, direct resources where they can have the greatest impact and remain engaged as recovery continues. In addition to the LCIF grant, Lions across Nepal raised US$67,000 for relief efforts and Lions in several other countries are adding their financial support. With these resources, local Lions are developing plans to help the region rebuild after immediate needs are met.

LCIF Disaster Relief Grants support Lions-led efforts through all phases of disaster response.
